Google video

Some time end of last year, there were talks about Google, Yahoo and Microsoft developing new search tools for video. Google, as expected released its beta version today.

"Our mission is to give viewers complete access to public affairs programming and we are committed to use new technologies to enhance the value of our services."
-Brian Lamb, C-SPAN Chairman and CEO

I ran a search on 'Friends' and clicked on 'The One Where Eddie Wont Go' link. It threw up still images from the show along with short snippets of text. It also tells you when the next show is likely to go on air (date and time). The search is now limited to a few American Channels like FOX and NBC, so it will take a while before an Indian version is out. Catching up with your favourite tele-serials will be a breeze then!

Very, very neat. I am just wondering where the revenues for this product is gonna come from. Maybe it doesnt matter on a product by product basis for Google and what really counts is that in the medium term, they want to be everything in the search business, thus snuffing out the competition for good. As it stands, Yahoo search engine will shortly be consigned to dust. Dont rule out Microsoft in this business though - softie's incredible reach and access to unlimited capital has often forced competitors to eat humble pie.

You're probably right about Microsoft. MSN Search has quite a few good features - like Encarta search , etc. But I strongly feel that they still have a long way to in terms of usability. What I once thought was good seems to be too cluttered and painful to look at these days. They need to redesign their information architecture soon, if they want to be of any significance in this domain.
Yahooooo, well I dont agree totally though. They seem to be doing something and its certainly looking good. Will have to wait and watch.
